Nurturing the Caregiver: An Art Therapy Group for Food Allergy Parents
Managing food allergies is an intensive, 24/7 job. It requires vigilance, precise navigation of social spaces, and a baseline level of hyperawareness that can easily lead to burnout, isolation, and unexpressed anxiety. This group offers an opportunity to step out of "management mode" and into a supportive community of peers who truly understand the daily weight of keeping a child safe.
Connecting with the Allergy Journey Through Art
When it comes to the complex emotional landscape of food allergies—the hidden fears, the grief of missed social milestones, or the relief of a safe space—words can sometimes feel inadequate or exhausting to repeat. Art-making bridges that gap.
Externalizing the Invisible: Through the creative process, caregivers can take abstract feelings like anxiety, vigilance, or protective love and turn them into tangible visual forms. Seeing an emotion outside of oneself makes it easier to process, share, and understand.
A Shared Visual Language: In a group setting, art becomes a powerful tool for connection. Pointing to a color, a texture, or a shape allows parents to say, "This is what it feels like " prompting instant recognition and deep empathy from others.
Art-Making as a Tool for Healing, Reflection, and Coping
No prior artistic skill or experience is required to benefit from this group. The focus is entirely on the process of creation, not the final product.
Mindful Coping and Stress Reduction: The sensory act of creating art activates the body's relaxation response. It serves as an active, tactile coping skill that anchors us in the present moment, offering a much-needed mental break from chronic stress.
Meaningful Insights and Self-Reflection: Creative expression bypasses our analytical, logical minds and taps into deeper emotional truths. The imagery that emerges often reveals surprising insights about a caregiver's personal resilience, hidden strengths, or specific areas where they need to extend themselves more self-compassion.
A Path to Renewal and Healing: By transforming heavy experiences into tangible art within a non-judgmental environment, parents can begin to rewrite their relationship with the allergy journey. It shifts the narrative from one of pure survival to one of shared strength, self-discovery, and emotional healing.
Group Environment: Every session is guided by Alyssa Sousa a licensed Art Therapist with over 15 years of experience. Alyssa is also a parent to a child with multiple food allergies. ensuring a physically and emotionally safe environment where caregivers can shed their armor, connect deeply with others, and discover new internal resources for the road ahead. This is a closed group meaning that the same group members will meet once weekly to ensure a safe and supportive environment. A brief consultation is required prior to attending.

Do you feel ready to explore patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviors that are no longer working for you?
I offer a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can build awareness and insight into ways of thinking and feeling that are no longer helpful or needed. I will work with you in a collaborative and supportive manner to work towards healthy changes that feel right for you.
Do you find you need more space for yourself?
Looking into therapy is a brave first step. It can be hard to find the time to invest in and focus on ourselves. I approach therapy from a humanistic and client centered approach. This means that the therapeutic space centers around your needs. In an increasingly busy and demanding world, having this space for ourselves is so valuable. it can help you reset, reflect, and feel more empowered.
Are you ready to develop and explore coping skills to help improve your mental and physical health?
Therapy can take time. It can also be a space where you gain concrete and evidenced based tools to better cope with daily life outside of session. I am well versed in implementing DBT, CBT , mindfulness practices, and trauma informed practices and techniques into my work. These interventions and techniques can help address and manage depression, anxiety and stress.
Do you want more knowledge and resources to feel more empowered and informed about your mental health?
I value incorporating psycho-education into my practice. It can lend itself to greater self acceptance and self compassion. Knowledge can be transformative and empowering in the therapeutic process. Along with psycho-education, I am a strong advocate for connecting you to additional supports and resources in an effort to promote growth and healing.
Find a space for yourself that is collaborative, supportive and healing.
